Revelwood Offers Open Enrollment for Workday Adaptive Planning OfficeConnect

We have expanded our Workday Adaptive Planning Open Enrollment training courses. We now offer a new class, Introduction to OfficeConnect.

The course is designed for report developers with minimal experience with Workday Adaptive Planning’s OfficeConnect. Participants will learn:

  • OfficeConnect terminology and navigation.
  • How to create an OfficeConnect report dynamically linked to a Workday Adaptive Planning instance.
  • How to work with relative and static time-elements enabling you to create rolling report periods.
  • How to use parameters and labels to enable creating either a tabular Excel report or one report with selection options. A report with selection options is mainly used with the Level element from Workday Adaptive Planning.
  • How to link selected elements from a previously created Excel report to the matching Workday Adaptive Planning data. This enables you to use all of the creative presentation already existing in the report.

Additionally, participants will see a demonstration of the connectivity between OfficeConnect and its associated Word and PowerPoint applications.

Workday Adaptive Planning Tips & Tricks: Write-back for OfficeConnect

There is a lot to be excited about with Workday Adaptive Planning’s new release. From changes in the Adaptive Planning interface itself, to updates with Workday’s OfficeConnect Excel plug-in, there is something that will benefit every user. Today we will be focussing on OfficeConnect and the new write-back to Adaptive Planning capability. 

Getting Started

To get started with the new write-back feature, it is important to make sure that your OfficeConnect plug-in is updated and the most recent version is installed. If up to date, you will be able to see a write-back section under your OfficeConnect ribbon on Excel. Write-back will not initially be available to every user in the Adaptive Planning instance. It must be enabled. This can be enabled by going to the “Administrative” permission set and selecting the “Write-back from external sources” check box.

Functionality

This new feature allows you to update your planning data without leaving Excel. This makes it super easy for users who are comfortable with Excel and have not fully gotten acclimated to Adaptive Planning. Using OfficeConnect allows the user to use common Excel capabilities such as formulas and copy/paste functions.

Once you are in OfficeConnect and have a report built out, it is important to know which cells can be edited for write-back. You must select a range of columns or rows with a valid leaf level intersection and a time roll-up cannot be included such as a quarter or year.

Once you have your columns and/or rows that you would like to use for write-back, you could go ahead and hit “Write-back” in the OfficeConnect Ribbon. This will now highlight the editable rows yellow. You can now make edits directly on this sheet and it will transfer directly over to Adaptive Planning. Cell contents turn blue to show that an edit has been made. Lastly, all you need to do is hit submit and you have successfully completed a write back.

Once you have made changes, you can go ahead and submit. After submitting you will realize that the values have changed. You can proceed to exit write-back mode by just hitting the write back button again.

Workday Adaptive Planning Tips & Tricks: Excel Reporting Using a Report Template

Many users of Workday Adaptive Planning utilize OfficeConnect for their Excel reporting. But not all users will have access to OfficeConnect, depending on your organization. But there is another great option for Excel reporting called a Report Template.

What is the difference between OfficeConnect and a Report Template?

Templates are Excel files which can be added to regular reports, including repeating reports. Instead of running an HTML report, you can have a custom Excel report. Below are some nice features, as once you use it, it will become a favorite for reporting.

Report Templates allow:

  • Custom formatting data from Adaptive such as background color, font color, and font type.
  • Calculations on the data, along with including graphs and notes.
  • Use with repeating reports.
  • A saved Excel file attached to a report.
  • Macros can be added to templates.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to create an Excel report using a report template.

  1. Locate the Adaptive Planning HTML report which has the data you want for your Excel report.

  2. Right click on the report and choose Run as Excel, and the file will download. Learn about Excel reporting using a template in Workday Adaptive Planning
  3. Open the downloaded Excel file. You will see the Excel data on the first sheet.

    a. The report is the same as the report in Step 1 but in Excel.

  4. On this sheet, you can change fonts, and add conditional formatting, calculations, etc. If you want to add other sheets for more reporting, you can use formulas to reference data on the first sheet.

    a. In this example, we have changed fonts style and added conditional formatting for the % Var column.

    b. In this example, we added another sheet and created a graph and ratios using formulas to reference the first sheet (report data). You can add multiple sheets to create a customized report or a report book. You can also hide sheets. For example, the Report Info tab Adaptive includes in all excel reports or the first sheet with the data.

  5. Return to the report in Adaptive Planning.

    a. Right click on the same HTML report and select Attach Template.

    b. Click Choose File button and select the excel file you just created which has your updated report with formatting, formulas, graphs, etc. Click OK. Once the file is selected click Open.

    c. The file icon will change colors from blue to green, so you know the report has been properly attached.

  6. Run the report and it will automatically download as an Excel file. Your existing report has been generated and has applied all applicable prompts. For example, the month of data will change per the prompt option selected.

You now have an Excel report! And can run it anytime!
