IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks Video: The Aggregate Function

October 13, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Videos

Watch our latest IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video to learn about the aggregate function. Lee Lazarow, Revelwood’s FP&A Technology director, demonstrates this new function that allows you to summarize values that cannot be added up or averaged.

You’ll see Lee create a simple view of net income, examining some of the details associated with opex. He looks at it for multiple companies and for a total. Lee explains how one set of data is from the original numbers that your planners input into Planning Analytics. That data is doing a standard roll-up.

The second set of data is for a calculation of the percentage of net income. Lee demonstrates what you should do if you don’t want to look at the pre-built consolidation, but instead want to look at only some of the companies. He walks you through how to create your own calculation.

You’ll learn how to make sure this calculation is not a sum calculation, but instead how to leverage the aggregate function to summarize values such as percentages or ratios.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: Creating Groups in PAW

September 22, 2020 by Lee Lazarow Leave a Comment

Did you know that you can create new groups and delete groups directly in IBM Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW)?  This is done within the dimension editor via the same screen that you use to edit dimensions and attributes.

Step 1: Select the dimension to be edited.  This is done by either right clicking on a dimension and selecting the option to “Edit Dimension” or by dragging the dimension onto a sheet.

Step 2: Switch to member security mode.  This is done by clicking the Member Security Mode icon:

Step 3: You can now modify groups by selecting the icon to either create or delete a group:

Creating groups in IBM Planning Analytics Workspace

If you choose the option to create a group then you will be prompted for the group name.

How to create groups in IBM Planning Analytics Workspace

Once created, you can then set security by right clicking on the applicable areas:

  • Right click on the group name to define security for all elements within the group
  • Right click on a specific element to define security only for that element

This approach will save you time by allowing you to perform all aspects of dimension maintenance within a single area.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: The Data Load Process

May 26, 2020 by Lee Lazarow Leave a Comment

Tips & Tricks

In an IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, I showed how to use a drag and drop approach to load data into a cube. Since that time, the wizard has been updated to allow you to save your import as a new TurboIntegrator process and to also schedule the process within a chore.

After dragging the file onto the cube, the first screen that appears is a confirmation of the file with some file-based setup aspects such as the delimiter, the quote character and the number of header rows:

After clicking the continue button, the second screen appears which allows you to define the columns and aspects associated with the data load (before and during):

The Data Load Process in IBM Planning Analytics

The bottom, right corner of this screen allows you to save the import as a process and/or a chore:

IBM Planning Analytics Tips: The Data Load Process

Once executed, the process will be saved and can be referenced using PAW’s process functionality:

This approach within Planning Analytics allows you to use a drag and drop approach to create and save Planning Analytics code.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: Using Words Instead of Numbers

March 3, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Video

In today’s IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, our FP&A Technology Director, Lee Lazarow, demonstrates how you can use words to input data in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) instead of numbers. In the old TM1-world, you had the ability to put numbers into your system as part of your normal planning approach. Now, you can use words. Let’s explain …

Watch our Planning Analytics video and you’ll learn how to:

  • Enter words such as 2k to indicate 2,000
  • Enter 2.5K for 2,500
  • Use the “greater than” sign to spread values into other cells and reconsolidate them
  • Have Planning Analytics Workspace do the math for you by typing in common phrases such as “add 100” or “increase by 10%”

This approach gives you a great deal of flexibility when using PAW. You can use your number keypad, your standard keyboard, or even voice commands to enter data into Planning Analytics.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: How to Reorder TM1 Cubes in Planning Analytics Workspace

February 18, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Videos

In today’s IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, our PF&A Technology Director, Lee Lazarow, demonstrates a new feature in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) version 2.0.44, that enables you to reorder TM1 cubes. Your TM1 cubes were likely designed for a specific reason. Over the course of years, the data has been changed and added to. TM1 would let you optimize the system by reordering the dimensions and re-indexing the database.

Watch this Planning Analytics video to see how this new feature lets you optimize your cubes by reordering them. When you reorder your cubes, PAW gives you information about the optimization, including if there will be an increase or decrease in performance, and what the impact on RAM will be.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks Video: Filtering in Planning Analytics

February 11, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Video

In today’s IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, our FP&A Technology Director, Lee Lazarow, demonstrates how to do filtering in Planning Analytics. Filtering in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) will make it easy for your users to select the data they want to see, thereby giving them a good user experience.

The new PAW interface works much like Windows Server does – you can do various searches (wildcard searches, level searches, attribute searches) and thereby take a giant list of elements and filter it down to a smaller subset. The PAW interface even takes it a step further by enabling you to make your search criteria much more structured and user-friendly.

When you master the ability to do filtering in PAW, you’ll enable your users to easily select the data they need.
