IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: Creating Multi-Level Dimensions

March 31, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Video

In today’s IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, our FP&A Technology Director, Lee Lazarow, demonstrates how to create multi-level dimensions in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW). This new feature allows you to build brand-new dimensions by simply dragging a file onto your screen.

Watch the video and you’ll learn:

  • How to take a multi-level file of cities and states in Notepad and drag it into PAW
  • How the leaf-level elements will be the specific cities
  • How the parent-level will be the states
  • How that rolls up to a grand total called Tri-State

From there, you then learn:

  • How to create a dimension
  • Name your dimension
  • How Planning Analytics has built-in logic to understand the levels of your file

This is just one of many new useful features in Planning Analytics.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks Video: Filtering in Planning Analytics

February 11, 2020 by Lisa Minneci Leave a Comment

Video

In today’s IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks video, our FP&A Technology Director, Lee Lazarow, demonstrates how to do filtering in Planning Analytics. Filtering in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) will make it easy for your users to select the data they want to see, thereby giving them a good user experience.

The new PAW interface works much like Windows Server does – you can do various searches (wildcard searches, level searches, attribute searches) and thereby take a giant list of elements and filter it down to a smaller subset. The PAW interface even takes it a step further by enabling you to make your search criteria much more structured and user-friendly.

When you master the ability to do filtering in PAW, you’ll enable your users to easily select the data they need.

Revelwood Launches Report Conversion Service for Migrating Excel & TM1 Web Reports to PAx

October 17, 2019 by John Pra Sisto Leave a Comment

News & Events

Revelwood has launched a new Report Conversion service to help TM1 users to migrate their Excel and TM1 Web (Websheets) reports to Planning Analytics for Excel (PAx). Our service also helps TM1 users recreate their existing Excel or TM1 Web reports in PAx.

As with all the aspects of migrating from TM1 to Planning Analytics, there is a significant benefit to migrating existing reports to the new platform. The biggest of these benefits is improving performance. When you migrate to, or recreate these reports in PAx, you’ll also be able to take advantage of both Active Forms and MDX to make the new versions of your reports truly dynamic.

Migrating reports can be time-consuming. But it also presents the opportunity to review your report library and assess which reports you actually need and which ones you can retire. Rather than get overwhelmed with the prospect of assessing and moving your reports, let us help you.

Revelwood’s report conversion service consists of:

  • Conversion – We’ll convert your Excel reports from TM1 Perspectives to PAx. We’ll work with you to make sure the new reports look the way you want them to look, execute correctly, and render as Websheets where appropriate. We’ll use our own tools we’ve developed, specifically designed to streamline the conversion process. We’ll also make sure you have easy access to all the reports in your report library.
  • Optimization – Over time reports tend to become laden with too much information, or, on the flip slide, missing data elements. They also end up with hidden hard-coded values, errors, and performance issues. Our Report Conversion service includes automating and optimizing for accuracy and improved performance. You’ll save time and eliminate errors in your ongoing reporting process.
  • Rationalization – We’ll work with you to rationalize your reporting strategy. Together we’ll determine which reports you need and which reports can be combined to save time and effort. We’ll decide which reports need to be rendered in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) and accessed via a browser, instead of in Excel. We’ll also help you determine if Quick Reports and/or Explorations should be used instead of the traditional DBRW-style reports from TM1.
  • Education – We’ll make you self-sufficient in creating and maintaining PAx reports going forward! Our team will train you on PAx, with an emphasis on how to build well-designed, dynamic financial reports that leverage the best of both Planning Analytics and Excel.

Migrating your existing reports to Planning Analytics presents a unique opportunity to assess your reporting strategy, optimize and streamline your reports. Don’t just migrate your reports wholesale. Let us help you convert and make the most out of your reports.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: The Planning Analytics Workspace Rule Editor, Part 2

June 4, 2019 by Revelwood Leave a Comment

Tips & Tricks

This is a guest post from Shane Bethea.

Did you know there are new features in the IBM Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) Rule editor that were not in the TM1 Rule editor? Even if you are familiar with writing rules in TM1, you might want some tips and tricks for the new Rule editor in PAW. Here are some helpful features of the new Rule editor.

One new feature in the PAW Rule editor is the autocomplete feature.  While editing rules, use CTRL+Space to bring up autocomplete.

  • type the letter s and CTRL+Space returns SKIPCHECK;
  • type [2 and CTRL+Space returns a list of all elements in the cube that start with 2

Another helpful feature in the PAW Rule editor is a line by line warning of invalid code. If there is invalid code on a line, that line will have a red x indicator on the left side of the window. Hovering your mouse over the x will display the error message.

IBM Planning Analytics Tips & Tricks: The Planning Analytics Workspace Rule Editor, Part 1

May 28, 2019 by Revelwood Leave a Comment

Tips & Tricks

This is a guest post from Shane Bethea.

Did you know that most TM1/Planning Analytics development can now be done in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW)? PAW has a lot of development capabilities and allows modelers to do most development that would have previously been done in Perspectives. In addition, PAW has new development capabilities that are not available in Perspectives.

There are six modeling widgets available in a PAW book.

  • Dimension editor
  • Cube creator
  • Rule editor
  • Process editor
  • Chore editor
  • Settings editor

This post will focus on the PAW Rule editor. The Rule editor looks very similar to the Advanced Rule editor in prior versions of TM1. It has easy to read, color coded formatting and code sections can be separated into collapsible regions.

To open the Rule editor, right click a cube and choose Edit business rules.

In the Rule editor, you will notice two drop down selectors in the upper left corner of the window. These drop downs allow you to select the database and the cube that is being modified. This allows you to switch from cube to cube, which reduces the dependence on the navigation tree.

In the upper right corner, you can select the Function drop down to insert rule functions and get brief definitions of rule functions.

Use the Settings drop down in the upper right corner to enable line wrapping, show/hide shortcut keys, and change font.
